Boy at swimming pool

While school districts are beginning to set opening dates, there is still time for everyone to enjoy the summer. In many cases, this means going for a swim to cool down.

Did you know Texas has the most pool drowning deaths in the United States? MedStar has responded to 24 drowning cases so far this year. That’s compared to 16 at this time last year.

According to the Fort Worth Water Drowning Prevention Coalition, parents are encouraged to teach their kids about water safety including the use of floatation devices as well as swimming lessons. However, the coalition reminds parents that supervision and swimming with others are keys to keeping your child safe.

The coalition states on their website: in many cases, a drowning is a completely silent event, and two seconds is too long to turn your back on a child in water.

Since many of us will be closing out the summer in a pool, lake or ocean – we want to remind everyone to be safe.
